Accoya Raises the Bar for Verified Sustainable Wood With Cradle to Cradle Gold

Accoya and Accoya Color have earned Cradle to Cradle Gold under the tougher Version 5.0 standard. See what the certification — and a shift to 100% renewable electricity — means for sustainable wood specification.

As architects, designers and manufacturers face growing pressure to document the environmental impact of the materials they specify, Accsys has achieved a new sustainability benchmark for its Accoya wood products.

Accoya and Accoya Color have earned Cradle to Cradle Certified Full Scope Gold under the new Version 5.0 standard, placing the products among the first building materials to achieve Gold certification under the more stringent requirements introduced earlier this year.

For the surface, panel and wood-products industries, the significance reaches beyond the certification itself. Version 5.0 evaluates products across material health, circularity, climate impact, water and soil stewardship, and social responsibility — giving specifiers a broader measure of sustainability than a single environmental attribute.

The certification also prompted a notable change in Accoya manufacturing: the wood is now produced using 100 percent renewable electricity, according to Accsys.

A Tougher Sustainability Standard

Released in February 2026, Version 5.0 of the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard raises requirements in areas including renewable energy use, greenhouse gas reductions, circularity pathways, human rights management and water conservation.

Products pursuing Full Scope certification are assessed across five categories: Material Health, Product Circularity, Clean Air & Climate Protection, Water & Soil Stewardship and Social Fairness.

For Accsys, achieving Gold required an assessment of raw materials, manufacturing processes and environmental performance across production facilities in Europe and the United States.

The process included extensive data collection, technical documentation and independent verification.

“We are extremely proud to have met the rigorous updated requirements of the standard,” said Gillian Edwards, head of ESG at Accsys. “Being among the first building products to achieve this is testimony to our longstanding commitment to sustainability and circularity.”

Edwards said the certification provides customers with independent assurance covering material health, circularity, responsible production and environmental and social performance.

From Sustainability Claims to Specification Data

That independent verification may be increasingly important for architects, designers and other material specifiers.

Rather than relying solely on a manufacturer's sustainability claims, certifications such as Cradle to Cradle provide third-party evaluation against defined criteria — information that can become particularly valuable when products are being considered for projects pursuing environmental building standards.

Cradle to Cradle Certified products are recognized within green building programs including LEED and BREEAM.

Accsys says the certification allows architects and customers specifying Accoya to connect broader sustainability objectives with individual material choices while retaining the durability and dimensional stability for which the modified wood is designed.

Renewable Energy Becomes Part of the Equation

To comply with Version 5.0 requirements, Accsys transitioned Accoya manufacturing to 100 percent renewable electricity.

The company also said it has committed to offsetting 25 percent of its cradle-to-gate emissions, including transportation emissions, while continuing efforts to improve manufacturing energy efficiency.

Together, those changes illustrate how increasingly rigorous sustainability standards are beginning to influence not only the attributes of the finished material but also how it is produced.

For wood-product manufacturers and suppliers, that distinction is becoming increasingly important. Sustainability credentials are expanding beyond questions of sourcing and recycled content to include energy, manufacturing emissions, circularity, material chemistry and social practices across the value chain.

Accoya and Accoya Color's Cradle to Cradle Certified Gold status is valid through October 2029.
