Garnica, a global producer of premium plywood, has become the first company in Spain to achieve PEFC RED III certification, marking a significant advancement in sustainable wood manufacturing and biomass traceability.
The certification verifies that Garnica’s wood by-products—repurposed for energy generation — meet strict sustainability and traceability requirements under the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED III). The designation provides independent assurance that biomass materials entering the energy supply chain are responsibly sourced, handled, and utilized in line with rigorous environmental standards.
Developed to support compliance with evolving EU renewable energy regulations, PEFC RED III certification is designed to improve transparency and accountability across the biomass supply chain. For panel and wood products manufacturers, the standard is increasingly relevant as the industry continues to prioritize circular resource use, energy efficiency, and waste reduction.
For Garnica, the milestone reflects a broader commitment to maximizing material yield while minimizing environmental impact. By ensuring that production by-products are effectively repurposed for energy, the company is advancing a more circular approach to manufacturing—one that aligns with both regulatory demands and market expectations.
“Becoming the first company in Spain to achieve PEFC RED III certification reinforces our commitment to responsible manufacturing and long-term environmental stewardship,” said Álvaro González, CEO of Garnica. “We hope it helps set a benchmark for manufacturers across industries seeking to align growth with sustainability.”
The achievement further positions Garnica among a growing group of manufacturers investing in verified sustainable practices, particularly as scrutiny around renewable energy sourcing and supply chain integrity continues to intensify across global markets.
