The National Lighting Bureau (NLB) has opened submissions for the 2026 Lighting Transformation Awards, recognizing outstanding lighting retrofit projects that demonstrate innovation, sustainability and measurable improvements to the built environment.
Now in its third year, the awards program is co-sponsored by the International Association of Lighting Management Companies (NALMCO) and honors projects that achieve significant performance gains with minimal alteration to existing building materials. The program highlights retrofit strategies that improve visual quality, occupant well-being, energy efficiency, safety and overall building performance through the thoughtful application of lighting systems and controls.
For architects, designers, manufacturers and building professionals, the awards showcase practical examples of how retrofit projects can extend the life and value of existing spaces while meeting evolving sustainability and performance goals.
In addition to the primary awards, all entries will be considered for a Special Citation recognizing exemplary lighting controls design and implementation, presented in partnership with the Lighting Controls Association.
Projects completed during the 2024, 2025 or 2026 calendar years are eligible for consideration. Entries will be evaluated on lighting quality improvements, energy performance, sustainability, design adaptability and the overall effectiveness of the retrofit solution. Judges may also award additional points for projects that overcome unique design or construction challenges or provide meaningful community impact.
The NLB encourages entrants to include supporting documentation beyond project photography and lighting specifications, such as planning materials, energy data, occupant feedback and other project documentation that illustrates the design process and measurable outcomes.
The early-bird entry deadline is August 14, 2026, with a reduced submission fee of $50 per project. The final submission deadline is August 28, 2026. Winners will be recognized during the 2026 NALMCO Annual Convention and Trade Show, Oct. 11–13 in Phoenix.
The Lighting Transformation Awards are intended not only to recognize excellence but also to serve as a resource for the industry by highlighting best practices and providing real-world examples that can inform future lighting retrofit projects across commercial, institutional and outdoor environments.
