LIGNA 2027 is bringing timber construction to center stage with LIGNA.Builds, a new live feature that will see a full-scale wood-frame home constructed throughout the five-day exhibition in Hanover, Germany.

Taking place May 10-14, the project will give visitors a firsthand look at the complete timber construction process—from digital planning and engineering through prefabrication, machining and on-site assembly. Unlike a typical trade show demonstration, the house will become a permanent residence after the event, with the structure dismantled, transported and reassembled at its final location.

Developed in partnership with holzbau.tech and supported by Rosenheim Technical University of Applied Sciences, the project is designed to illustrate how digital manufacturing, industrialized production and skilled craftsmanship are reshaping modern timber construction.

For manufacturers of panels, components, machinery and engineered wood products, LIGNA.Builds offers a rare opportunity to see the entire value chain operating as a connected system rather than as individual technologies.

Visitors will follow every stage of production, including design development, material selection, engineering, CNC manufacturing, industrial prefabrication and final assembly. Components produced by participating exhibitors throughout the show will be transported to the construction site and incorporated into the building in real time, highlighting the integration between manufacturing technologies and construction workflows.

"With LIGNA.Builds, we are making visible just how closely interconnected the entire process chain of modern timber construction really is," said Stephanie Wagner, Head of LIGNA at Deutsche Messe AG. "Visitors will experience the complete journey from raw timber to a finished building—live and in action."

The initiative reflects the rapid evolution of timber construction as manufacturers increasingly combine BIM, automation, robotics, CNC machining and modular prefabrication to improve productivity, precision and sustainability. By connecting machinery, materials and digital workflows in a single live project, LIGNA.Builds demonstrates how wood processing technologies are enabling faster construction timelines and more efficient use of renewable materials.

The live construction site will anchor a new outdoor hub featuring LIGNA.Builds Village, where exhibitors will showcase products and services related to timber construction, and LIGNA.TruckStop, a hands-on area focused on power tools, fastening systems, hardware and wood-based materials for construction professionals.

Together, the three features are intended to provide a comprehensive look at the technologies driving industrialized timber construction while creating new opportunities for collaboration among machinery manufacturers, material suppliers, fabricators, architects and builders.
