Blum charity drive at Interzum, Germany generates more than $115,000

Blum makes donation to “Light for the World” instead of giving away promotional items to visitors at interzum

One signature translates to one donation

Visitors at the interzum tradeshow in Cologne, Germany were asked to sign a guestbook instead of receiving a promotional item for visiting Blum’s booth. For every signature collected, Blum donated roughly $35 (or the cost of an eye operation) to Light for the World. This charity organization focuses on restoring sight to people in the poorest areas of the globe. With Blum’s generous donation of more than $115,000, approximately 3,350 operations can be completed. Blum has been continuing this philanthropic tradition for more than 30 years at interzum, a world-leading tradeshow for furniture production and interior design. This was the sixth time Light for the World was chosen as the beneficiary.

About Light for the World

Every five seconds, an adult in the Third World loses his or her sight. Every minute, a child in the Third World goes blind. Cataracts are responsible for approximately 50% of all blindness cases worldwide. In a 15-minute operation that costs $35, the clouded lens can be replaced by an artificial one, saving the patient’s eyesight. “We facilitate cataract operations, set up hospitals and support the training of eye specialists and opticians. Our goal is to conquer trachoma by 2020,” the aid organization states. In recent years, Light for the World has performed more than 50,000 cataract operations in Africa, Asia, Latin America and South-Eastern Europe, restoring their eyesight to people who would otherwise have been blind for life.
