USDA Program Threatens US Composite Wood Supply

View more articles in:

Last week it was reported that the US Office of Management and Budget (OMB) had approved $514.5 million in subsidies to support the Biomass Crop Assistance Program (BCAP).This action puts the entire US composite wood fiber supply at risk and is a direct threat to many members of our association and all industries that rely on composite panel products. Members received a communication last week with information on how the BCAP program works and why it must be changed. It also asked for urgent support in helping CPA and others get the BCAP regulation amended so it does not include the raw materials needed by panel producers as core feedstock – and needed to make furniture, cabinets and other higher-value consumer and construction products throughout the United States.

This is a time for the North American supply chain to work together on a matter that has urgent significance for the US economy and environment – and for the future of products made with composite wood. Member intervention now will help ensure an ongoing wood supply for the composite panel industry and an appreciation by the federal government that higher-value wood should not be subsidized so it can be burned. This is a time sensitive issue and communicating with the US Congress is of vital importance. For more information on contacting your local representative, contact John Bradfield.
