Roseburg Forest Products, based in Oregon, announces its acceptance as a shipper/transport partner in the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) SmartWay Transport Partnership. This voluntary program between shippers and carriers functions to increase awareness and efficiency of energy usage as well as reduce the carbon footprint created by manufactures and their carrier partners.
“Our participation in EPA’s SmartWay demonstrates our commitment to better management of our resources and reducing our impact on the environment,” said Chuck Ulik, Roseburg chief operating officer. “Our decision to participate in SmartWay is simply good business for us, our suppliers and our customers.”
The Carriers and shippers interested in becoming SmartWay partners are required to evaluate their environmental impact using a model that measures and calculates the efficiency or deficiencies a company has that affect its carbon footprint. The model takes into account whether a shipper uses SmartWay certified carriers, the extent of rail and intermodal usage, and equipment practices within the shipper’s own facilities.
“Roseburg has achieved huge milestones in reducing its carbon footprint," said Jeff Brandt director of transportation for Roseburg, which manufactures particleboard, engineered wood products, plywood and lumber. "SmartWay is just one more benchmark that sets Roseburg apart as an outstanding steward of the environment. We plan to continue our efforts to further reduce carbon emissions.”
